Fifteen years ago I was invited to speak at Morden Rotary Club.

Along with a number of other parents I'd helped to develop a local football league in South London for over 600 children aged 12 -16.
In the years following, the Club was very supportive of our training programmes for the young players, coaches and referees.

As I learnt of Rotary's involvement in both local and international projects, it was an organisation I felt I could join and make a contribution.

Most people have heard of Rotary...who are we, what do we do?

Trust you'll be interested!

Read On for Local News from Morden Rotarians :-

The Rotary Wheel is an emblem you'll find in many places, and most often outside a hotel or restaurant, to show a club meets there regularly.
It might give the idea that members are focussed on having a good time?
Well it does and it doesn't!
Certainly the friendships formed in our club mean we enjoy each other's company.
But the reason we get together is to initiate and fulfill projects in both the local and national community.
And we're very serious about those objectives.

Morden Rotary Club's fifteen members have recently been involved with :-
Youth Speaks, Young Writer of the Year, Young Chef of the Year.
All these are aimed obviously at finding and challenging the talents of our local students.
This calls for organisational and administrative inputs from us, and we also sponsor the awards.

We raise money at fairs, and various other events, and most notably when Santa joins us every Christmas to make a street collection.

Our funds are used to support local charities and good causes.
These include St.Raphael's Hospice and the special needs schools, St. Ann's, Cricket Green and the Autistic Learning Centre.

Our managerial and business experience has been called upon to help projects as diverse as
Deen City Farm and conducting "mock interviews" with school leavers.
That calls for the expertise and experience of many of our members.

There are now two new A303 dinghies, specifically for introducing disabled people of all ages to sailing, at Wimbledon Park Sailing Club.
That took two years of serious fund-raising and net-working to achieve.
Early feed-back is that these have proved a wonderful new addition to the coaching schemes laid on by the very professional staff there.

Overseas we've continued Rotary's long term goal of eradicating polio.
This was common in the UK as late as the 1960s, but now only clings on in four third world countries.

This local club has also made regular contributions to provide shelter boxes and fresh water kits to disaster areas world-wide.
This is organised at a national level, the relief is flown directly and quickly to where it is needed, and delivered to the right agencies at the receiving end.

Rotary is involved with all the things above and many, many more...our motto is " Service above self ".

Meet a few famous Rotarians.

Winston Churchill, JFK, Marconi, Orville Wright, Gordon Selfridge, Albert Shweitzer.
Colonel Harlan Sanders [ Yes - him! ].

But most of the world's 1.2 million Rotarians are ordinary people with management experience or skills that they wish to contribute unselfishly, helping in many ways to improve the quality of life of those around them.

As ever, we'd love to hear from people who'd like to join Rotary.
Our members meet regularly at "The Morden Brook" in Lower Morden Lane.

You can become a Friend of Rotary, and help as and when you can.
Perhaps you have a project and need some support to get it going?
Ask Rotary to be your partner - there's no long term committment, and you'll find us good company!

Little League Football was started by Morden Club responding to parents requests, and sponsoring teams and renting grounds in this borough over 30 years ago.
It was much needed, hugely successful, and now you'll find it all over the UK.

If you'd like to have more details or come to a meeting, please call me now.
You can check out Wikipedia on "Rotary Clubs" for the definitive history...some of it surprised me!

Look forward to hearing from you, please call anytime.
